Curd rice/Daddojanam is a South Indian dish that comes as a smoothing delicious food at the end of the meals. Curd rice is made with precooked rice, curd (Yogurt) , Milk and tempering spices. It is also a school lunch box favourite food for kids.
Curd rice is prepared at the South India as Prasadam ((Naivedyam) in Temples and distributed among devotees. At the time of Navratri (Vijayadashami) during the Dussehra festival, Daddojanam is offered to Goddess Durga as Prasadam (Naivedyam).
Daddojanam (Curd Rice) Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups yogurt / thick curd
- 1 cup full fat milk pre boiled
- 2 tsp oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- ½ tsp cumin / jeera
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- ¾ tbsp chana dal
- ½ tbsp urad dal
- ½ tsp pepper
- ¼ tsp chopped onion
- Green chilis – 4 pieces
- Red chilis – 2 pieces
- 1 sprig kothimeera/Coriander leaves
Daddojanam (Curd Rice) Preparation:
- Wash one cup rice and soak for 20 mins. Soft cook it with 2 cups of water and ½ cup of milk in a pressure cooker for 2 whistles on a medium flame. You can also cook in a pot adding more water as needed.
- When the pressure goes down, open the lid and mash the rice soft while it is still very hot.
- Add ½ cup of milk to the hot rice and mix up very well. Set aside to cool.
- Heat oil in a kadai.Add mustard and cumin. When they crackle, fry the dals until lightly golden.Add curry leaves, pepper and hing. Switch off the stove.
- When the rice cools completely, Add curd and salt. Mix up well. Pour the onion fried over the curd rice.Mix up well.
